Achmed the Dead Terrorist is a skeletal puppet character created and performed by ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. Originally debuting in Dunham’s 2007 special Spark of Insanity, Achmed quickly became a viral sensation, best known for his aggressive catchphrase: “Silence! I keel you!” Dunham uses the character to satirize contemporary issues like terrorism, religious extremism, and American paranoia, often by portraying Achmed as comically incompetent, delusional, or unaware of his surroundings.

Achmed is presented as the remains of a failed suicide bomber. His backstory is riddled with inconsistencies for comedic effect. In his debut, he claims his bomb exploded prematurely due to a mistimed countdown—he set it for 30 minutes, but it detonated after just four seconds. In the song “Jingle Bombs,” which he performs in A Very Special Christmas Special, Achmed humorously claims he died from being “shot in the ass,” though this is treated as a side gag rather than canonical fact. Dunham frequently teases him for being a skeleton, to which Achmed responds with the deadpan line, “It’s a flesh wound.”

Despite presenting himself as a terrorist, Achmed denies being Muslim. He famously says, “Look at my ass! It says ‘Made in China’” as part of a broader parody of racial, religious, and cultural stereotypes. He claims to have once worked for Osama bin Laden but also boasts (in Controlled Chaos) that he may have killed him—while simultaneously suggesting he might be a closeted Navy SEAL. These absurd contradictions are part of his satirical charm.

Achmed is known for his crass, high-energy humor, often turning the jokes back on Dunham himself. One running gag involves jokes about sexual dysfunction, such as their shared problem of “premature detonation.” Another long-standing bit involves Achmed’s puppet feet twisting around mid-act, a physical gag that Dunham often improvises upon during live shows. He is also comically terrified of Dunham’s other puppet, Walter, especially Walter’s flatulence, which he claims is worse than chemical warfare.

He claims to have had 46 wives and fathered a son, Achmed Jr., with his 42nd. The spin-off special Achmed Saves America (2014) expanded the character into animation, placing him in a plot to destroy a small patriotic town called Americaville, only for him to inadvertently absorb and mirror the American culture he intended to destroy.

Due to the sensitive nature of the character, Achmed has occasionally drawn controversy. In one case, his name was changed to “Jacques Merde, the Dead French Terrorist” for the All Over the Map special's Malaysian release to avoid censorship.

As of June 2009, the original Spark of Insanity YouTube clip featuring Achmed had nearly 200 million views, making it one of the most-watched videos online at the time. The puppet itself was carefully designed for expressiveness, including custom-crafted eyes made by the same special effects artist who worked on Jurassic Park.

Achmed remains a staple of Jeff Dunham’s live performances and specials, representing an outlandish, exaggerated voice through which Dunham critiques the absurdities of global politics, cultural confusion, and the clash between fear and misunderstanding.
